Eyelid surgery, clinically referred to as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. As skin ages, it gradually loses its elasticity and the constant pull of gravity causes drooping of the skin over upper and lower eyelids.
There are many causes of facial aging. While genetics and menopause contribute; smoke, alcohol and sun affects the upper and lower eyelids the most. As skin ages, it gradually loses its elasticity and can droop. In addition the fat that cushions the eye of both lids can become displaced. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that helps to rejuvenate the eyelids.
An upper lid blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid, while the lower lid blepharoplasty typically removes only excess fat. Dr. Freedland uses the latest techniques to minimize visbility of incisions. Blepharoplasty typically lasts 10 years or more and can be performed along with other rejuvenation techniques, such as face lift, brow lift or dermal fillers.
